How to Grow Pak Choi Seeds

Pak choi is a fast-growing leafy vegetable that performs best in cool weather, fertile soil, and consistent moisture.

When to Sow

Sow pak choi seeds from early spring to late summer. For best results, plant during cool periods, as hot weather can cause bolting. Ideal germination temperature is 10–20°C.

Sowing Method

Seeds can be sown directly outdoors or started in trays. Plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in moist, fine soil. Keep soil evenly damp until seedlings appear.

Germination

Seedlings usually emerge in 5–10 days. Provide bright light and good airflow. Protect young plants from slugs and flea beetles.

Thinning & Transplanting

Thin seedlings to 15–25 cm apart once they reach 5 cm tall. If transplanting, move carefully to avoid disturbing roots. Water well after spacing or planting out.

Growing Conditions

Choose a site with full sun to light shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Pak choi prefers consistent moisture and cool temperatures. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Watering & Feeding

Water regularly to prevent stress and bitterness. Feed lightly every 2–3 weeks with compost tea or balanced fertilizer. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding.

Harvesting

Pak choi is ready in 30–45 days. Harvest whole plants at the base or pick outer leaves first for ongoing production. Best flavor comes from young, tender plants.

Season Tips

Grow in spring and autumn for highest quality crops. Provide shade in hot weather to prevent bolting. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest.
