How to grow Salvia Seeds
Salvia seeds grow best in full sun and light, well-drained soil.
Sowing Salvia Seeds
Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost, or sow outdoors once the soil has warmed. Sow seeds on the surface or cover very lightly, as salvia seeds need light to germinate.
Germination & Spacing
Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged at 18–24°C. Germination usually takes 10–21 days, though some varieties may take longer. Transplant seedlings outdoors after frost risk has passed, spacing plants about 25–40 cm apart.
Growing Conditions
Water regularly while seedlings establish, then water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Salvia performs well in warm, sunny Mediterranean conditions and is fairly drought-tolerant once established.
Care Tips
For best care, deadhead faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming and pinch young plants to promote bushier growth. Avoid heavy, wet soil, as salvia dislikes waterlogged conditions.
Salvia is excellent for balconies, patios, pots, sunny borders, herb gardens, and pollinator-friendly planting, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
