How to grow Celery Tango Seeds
Celery Tango is a productive celery variety that is best started indoors before transplanting outdoors once the weather has warmed.
Starting Celery Seeds Indoors
Celery Tango seeds can be started indoors about 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Use seed trays or small pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix.
Sowing & Germination
Plant the seeds about 0.5 cm deep in the soil. Celery seeds can take 7–14 days to germinate and should be kept in a warm location around 21°C.
Seedling Care
Gently press the seeds into the soil surface and water lightly. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Using a seedling heat mat can help speed up germination.
Transplanting
Once the celery seedlings have developed their first true leaves and are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or cell trays. Keep the seedlings well-watered and gradually introduce them to outdoor conditions if they will be planted outside.
Outdoor Planting
After the last frost date has passed and the soil has warmed up, transplant the Celery Tango seedlings into a sunny location in the garden. Celery prefers rich, moist soil with plenty of organic matter.
Space the plants about 20–25 cm apart in rows spaced 45–60 cm apart.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Celery requires regular watering to prevent the soil from drying out, but be careful not to overwater, as celery does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
Hilling
As the celery plants grow, mound soil around the base of the plants to blanch the stalks and protect them from sunlight. This helps improve the flavor and tenderness of the celery stalks.
Harvesting
Celery Tango plants take about 115 days to reach maturity. It can be harvested when the stalks are firm and about 30–45 cm tall.
Cut the outer stalks near the base of the plant, leaving the inner stalks to continue growing. For best flavour and longer storage, water plants the day before harvesting.
