When to sow:

• Cooler climates: Sow directly outdoors in early spring after the last severe frost, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before planting outside.
• Mild Mediterranean climates: Sow from September to November, after the intense summer heat has passed, for spring flowers. A second sowing can be made in late winter.
• For a longer flowering period, make two or three sowings approximately two weeks apart.

How to sow:
Direct sowing is recommended because Daucus develops a taproot and dislikes root disturbance. Sow thinly in rows or individually, cover with approximately 3–5 mm of soil and water gently. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination.

Germination:
Seeds usually germinate in 12–16 days at approximately 16–18°C. Cooler conditions are preferable to excessive heat.

Transplanting and spacing:

If started in trays, use individual cells and transplant carefully before the seedlings become rootbound. Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.

Position and soil:
Plant in full sun and average, well-drained soil. Avoid excessive fertiliser, particularly nitrogen, as this can produce abundant foliage but fewer flowers.

Growing tips:
Daucus ‘Dara’ does not require pinching. Tall plants may need netting or support in windy positions. Once established, they tolerate moderately dry soil.
