Mediterranean Balcony Flowers – Autumn-Sown Collection

Sow this balcony flower collection in autumn for spring flowering.

Mediterranean climates: sow from October to November.

Temperate Europe: sow from September to October, with later sowing possible in mild or sheltered areas.

Use pots, window boxes or planters with good drainage and fill with a quality, free-draining compost. Most varieties prefer a sunny position, although pansies will also tolerate some light shade.

Sow the seeds separately according to variety rather than mixing them together, as germination speed and final plant size vary. Cover seeds lightly with fine compost, keeping the surface gently moist but not waterlogged until germination.

Once seedlings are established, thin or transplant them into their final containers, allowing enough space for good airflow. Keep lower-growing varieties such as Iberis and pansy toward the front, medium-height flowers such as calendula, stock and snapdragon through the centre, and taller or more structural varieties such as Cupid Pink sweet pea, Pixie Bells and Bunny Tails toward the back.

Water regularly while plants are young, then water as needed once established. Avoid overfeeding, as too much fertiliser can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.

Provide a small support for Sweet Pea ‘Cupid Pink’ if needed, and protect young plants from severe or prolonged frost in colder regions.
