DESCRIPTION

Snapdragon ‘Night & Day’ is a dramatic heirloom variety with velvety burgundy-red flowers and sharply contrasting creamy-white throats. During cool weather, the dark petals deepen to almost black and the foliage develops rich burgundy tones, making the white “jaws” appear even brighter. Compact, branching plants grow to around 45 cm tall and produce lightly spicy-scented flower spikes that are loved by bumblebees. Beautiful in pots and borders, they also make striking, unusual cut flowers.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Sow snapdragon seeds in trays 8–10 weeks before planting out. Surface sow onto moist seed-starting compost, gently press into place and do not cover, as the seeds need light to germinate. Keep at 18-21°C and maintain even moisture without waterlogging. Germination usually takes 7–14 days.

Once seedlings emerge, move them to a bright, cooler position. Transplant when they have 2-3 true leaves, then harden off before planting 20-30 cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Grow in full sun or partial shade and water regularly at the base. Deadhead faded blooms to encourage continued flowering.

In Mediterranean climates, sow from late summer through autumn for winter and spring flowers, or in late winter for spring flowering. Some afternoon shade is beneficial when temperatures become hot.
